While my professional work experiences are quite vast often times the work I take the most pride in comes from my personal projects. Everything I've done fits into three categories: Community, Culture, and Character.
Cultivating Leadership
Award Winner (2019)
This local leadership award celebrates the life of a local hero Le Herron who demonstrated great servant leadership throughout his career and personal life. I was proud to be nominated by the staff of North Union School District as a student who exhibited great student leadership. As a part of the award I was matched with our County Auditor Andrea Weaver as a mentor. Originally meant to be only a year of mentorship Andrea has remained a friend and mentor throughout my high school and college career. She is a sounding for the challenges of being a female leader and a strong moral compass during the many life changes that have happen since I met her.
Program Participant (2019)
The Hugh O-Brian Youth Leadership Foundation was created "to inspiring and developing our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation."
I was nominated for a position in the program my sophomore year of high school and spent a week that summer building leadership skills, hearing from successful business leaders who had overcome great adversity, and learning to be a better team member. The program helped to create my strong foundation for future leadership positions.
Building Character
One of my biggest personal passions is travel. My parents took my sisters and I on trips around the continental United States when we were growing up. When I moved away I continued that tradition but expanded it internationally.
I've been blessed to visit....
Kenya (Kisumu, Nairobi, Lamu, Mombasa)
Tanzania (Moshi, Arusha, Zanzibar)
Portugal (Lisbon)
Italy (Naples, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome)
At each location I love to see local art and architecture, experience the food culture, and try to pick up some of the local language.
I have spent five years learning Spanish in a class room and two years learning Swahili online and with a speaking partner. Languages don't come easily to me and I still struggle to use either language conversationally but I get so much joy in trying to converse with native speakers that I continue to practice them every chance I get!
I read Forest Bathing by Dr. Qing Li in 2022, it completely changed my view on mental health and outdoor recreation. I quickly became a firm believer in the healing power of nature. Now after nearly every work day you'll find me wandering in the woods, playing pickleball, practicing outdoor hobbies, and learning about foraging and ecosystem management.
I highly recommend reading Forest Bathing!
This is an incomplete list of my personal passions and projects that keep me busy outside of work. I constantly look for new hobbies to try, places to visit, and experiences to help me grow. Do we have a hobby in common? Let's chat about it!
